Is Sex Therapy Covered by Insurance? What You Need to Know
If you've been thinking about sex therapy but hesitated because of the cost, you're not alone. One of the most common questions people ask before booking a first session is: "Will my insurance cover this?" The answer is nuanced, and understanding it can save you both money and frustration.
Whether you're in San Antonio, Texas, Maryland, Virginia, or Florida, here's what you actually need to know before you pick up the phone and call your insurance company.
What Is Sex Therapy, Exactly?
Sex therapy is a specialized form of talk therapy that addresses concerns related to sexual health, intimacy, relationships, and sexual functioning. It does not involve any physical contact. A certified sex therapist works with individuals and couples using evidence based techniques to navigate challenges like:
Low libido or mismatched sexual desire between partners
Erectile dysfunction or other sexual performance concerns
Pain during sex
Sexual shame, anxiety, or trauma
Relationship disconnection and intimacy issues
Recovering from betrayal trauma or infidelity
At Healing Intimacies, all sex therapy services are delivered by a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and AASECT Certified Sex Therapist meaning my credentials meet the gold standard set by the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists.
The Short Answer: It Depends
Insurance coverage for sex therapy depends on three things:
Your specific insurance plan
The diagnosis or clinical need being addressed
The type of service being provided
Here's the honest truth that most therapists won't spell out clearly: insurance companies only reimburse therapy when it is deemed "medically necessary." That means your therapist must provide a formal mental health diagnosis (like depression, anxiety, PTSD, or a sexual dysfunction diagnosis) and document that treatment is clinically warranted.
Sex therapy that falls under diagnosable mental health or sexual dysfunction categories may be covered. However, sex therapy focused on relationship enrichment, desire discrepancy, or personal growth, without a clinical diagnosis, is typically not covered by insurance. Insurance just see’s it as a optional choice! Sex, in their eyes, is voluntary because honestly… you can live without it.
What Insurance Does Healing Intimacies Accept?
Healing Intimacies, currently, accepts the following insurance plans as an in-network provider:
Aetna
Optum
United Healthcare
UMR
Cigna
If you carry one of these plans, some qualifying therapy services may be covered, but it's important to verify your specific benefits before your first session.
How to Check Your Mental Health Benefits
Before scheduling, call the member services number on the back of your insurance card and ask these key questions:
Do I have mental health benefits? And if so, how many sessions per year are covered?
Is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) covered under my plan?
Is prior authorization required before I begin services?
What is my deductible, and has it been met? Will I owe a copay or coinsurance?
Are couples therapy or sex therapy services covered, or only individual therapy?
Getting these answers before your first appointment helps you plan financially and avoid any billing surprises.
What If My Insurance Doesn't Cover Sex Therapy?
This is where a superbill becomes incredibly useful.
A superbill is a detailed receipt provided by your therapist that includes all the clinical and billing codes your insurance company needs to process a potential reimbursement. At Healing Intimacies, I provide superbills upon request; which means even if you pay out of pocket, you can submit it to your insurance company and potentially receive partial reimbursement depending on your out of network benefits.
Steps to use a superbill:
Request a superbill after your session
Submit it to your insurance company's out-of-network claim department
Your insurer will review whether your plan includes out-of-network mental health reimbursement
If applicable, you'll receive a check or account credit
Not all plans include out of network benefits, but many do, and many clients are surprised to find their plan will reimburse a meaningful portion of their sessions.
Is There a Benefit to Paying Without Insurance?
Yes, and it's worth understanding.
When you use insurance, your therapist is required to assign you a formal psychiatric or psychological diagnosis and document that services are "medically necessary." This diagnostic label becomes part of your permanent health record and may affect future insurance underwriting, life insurance applications, or employer-sponsored health plans depending on your state.
Paying privately (also called "self-pay") gives you more privacy, more flexibility in treatment, and removes the insurance company from your healing process entirely.
Many clients find that the freedom and privacy of self-pay is worth the cost, especially when addressing something as personal as sexual health and intimacy.
Why Couples Therapy and Sex Therapy Are Often Not Covered
This is one of the most frustrating realities in the mental health billing world.
Insurance companies frequently exclude couples therapy and many aspects of sex therapy from coverage because they classify them as not being "medically necessary." The insurance system was not designed with sexual wellness or relationship health in mind, and it shows.
This doesn't mean the care isn't valuable. It means the system hasn't caught up to the reality that sexual health is a fundamental part of overall mental and physical wellbeing. Until it does, a superbill or self-pay arrangement remains the most accessible path for many people seeking this type of specialized care.
A Note About Sex Therapy and Stigma
A lot of people avoid looking into sex therapy simply because they feel embarrassed to ask about the services, the cost, or what their insurance might think. If that resonates with you, know this: you are not broken, you are not alone, and there is nothing shameful about prioritizing this area of your health.
At Healing Intimacies, the practice is built on a foundation that is trauma informed, sex positive, and culturally affirming. You'll never be judged for your questions; including the financial ones.
